People are social beings and everyday there are many situations that can be considered social meetings. The most sociable question that is asked, even amongst strangers is “How are you doing?”. Such a common place question that everyone has an automatic response and most people answer before they even know that they did. This is a great opportunity for building a relationship if the opportunity arises. Most people just consider it good manners but just a few use this situation to their advantage. Those needing an ‘ear to bend’ will comment on their aggravations, or even their triumphs of the day and others will learn something new from their conversation.

Social marketing is based upon this “small talk” and getting to know your customer’s needs. Many people strive in such social situations and come away from their experience with not only feeling better about themselves but also knowing that they have influenced another person’s day. The information that you learn from a one time encounter can help with anticipating the needs of others. Listening to and remembering people will enhance future conversations and build the relationships needed to establish a solid business.

Social marketing is not a new concept to building a business. Many people know it as public relations and even customer service. This part of the business is very important to maintaining a good reputation. It is through this one on one contact with people that can influence their thoughts about you and what you have to offer them. The key is to use these types of situations wisely.

Be a good listener. Everyone wants to be heard and it is only beneficial for you to listen. The information that you will learn from can help you in building your business. Everyone has a need and it is your job to find out this need. You may be able to supply this need with either a service that you provide or a referral

Do not be afraid to engage in conversation. Social marketing is not always about promoting your business but also promoting you. People will want to get to know more about you once you start taking an interest in them.

Get to know other business builders as part of your social marketing campaign. As stated before, everyone has a need and other entrepreneurs are no different. Building business relationships are just as important when building your business. As you learn the needs of the people that you meet you will be able to suggest other businesses or you can refer other owners to potential customers. It can be beneficial for both of you if you are able to help each other out.

Always keep in touch with those interested in your business. Whether it is someone that took an interest in you, a customer that has received your services or another business that has helped you in some way. Continuous interaction will allow you to stay in the fore front of their mind and perhaps build your business through their social marketing situations.
